How to overcome connection failure due to insufficient privileges

DESCRIPTION

The Attunity PowerPivot Connector for Oracle may fail to connect to the source Oracle database, with an error in initializing provider, when the user running Excel doesn't have the required privileges.

This may result in the following error:

[C0797] Failed to load dynamic library 'nvdbora8'

Or

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

SOLUTION 1

Run Excel as administrator by right click the excel icon. You may need to Hold the shift while right clicking if the "Run as administrator" option doesn't appear.


SOLUTION 2

Add the Oracle Instant Client, included in the Attunity PowerPivot Connector for Oracle, path to the beggining of the Windows PATH environment variable value, before running Excel.
The instant client path, by default, is "C:\Program Files\Attunity\PowerPivot Connector for Oracle\OracleInstantClient".
If you are using 32-bit PowerPivot on x64 machine, then you need to add the 32-bit Oracle client to the path (C:\Program Files\Attunity\PowerPivot Connector for Oracle\OracleInstantClient32).
